Youtube Remote

La "nuova" GoogleTV che in questi giorni in molti hanno atteso potrebbe essere stata anticipata, e purtroppo ignorata, già da un pò.
Esiste infatti qualcosa che già oggi può trasformare qualsiasi apparecchiatura dotata di browser e uscita video in una Internet TV.
Si tratta di Youtube Remote, un applicativo che promette di portare una GoogleTV o, meglio, una "YoutubeTV" dentro le nostre case.
Oggi.
E senza che sia necessario acquistare nuovo hardware.

Basta collegare il proprio pc/portatile alla TV, aprire un browser e andare alla seguente pagina: http://www.youtube.com/leanback



Usando il vostro tablet Android potete procedere a fare il pairing tra quest'ultimo e la pagina "leanback".
Sul mio tablet il pairing ha richiesto 1 minuto (grazie a Google Goggles).

Dopo questo, utilizzare il tablet per comandare a distanza la mia "nuova" TV è stato semplice:




Il messaggio che passa è piacere digitale allo stato puro:

1. Ho in casa un prodotto nuovo e innovativo, che non sapevo di avere
2. I contenuti disponibili sono... ehm, parecchi. E Youtube non ha certo problemi a proporne di nuovi ogni giorno/ora/minuto
3. Il tablet o lo smartphone Android permettono un controllo remoto completo ed evoluto

Dal punto di vista dello sviluppatore sono poi rimasto favorevolmente colpito dall'intelligente mix di tecnologie pre-esistenti e standard,
cosa che implica che un qualsiasi hardware (anche di basso profilo) potrebbe offrire la medesima esperienza, preconfezionata in un set-top box a basso prezzo e di facile realizzazione.

Riassumendo questa analisi possiamo porci la domanda "Perchè è una buona idea Youtube Remote?" e (marzullamente) risponderci:

• Di sicuro perchè non ha bisogno di nuovo hardware: nella maggior parte delle nostre case sono già presenti un PC e uno smartphone/tablet
• Qualora così non fosse i produttori di hardware non dovranno realizzare dispositivi costosi e complicati, nè implementare nuovi standard, ma solo un set-top box contenente un browser di buona qualità e poco altro
• Non dover installare niente sul PC (nemmeno un'estensione del browser!)... non ha prezzo.

Powerful enough, easy to use and with tons of customizations possible, it is so far the best analytics tool I've seen. Well, it's free too.

A great river always starts up as a little spring

Every time I come to read a sentence similar to "new search algorithm will annihilate Google" or something like "X researchers teamed to find the anti-Google technology", well, I always feel the same:

Those pretty heated boys are likely to be first misunderstood, secondarily praised as the new Leonardo Da Vinci of the search-engines market, then beaten up by some quite obvious objections and finally forgotten in no time.

And, 'til now, they proved me right every time.

The reason is pretty simple: this kind of claims may be absolutely correct and these people really found something interesting and new, but they also found the worst possible way of promoting and marketing their idea: going against Google.

Why going against a Mountain with your new car is really a bad idea should be quite obvious, but let me offer some not-always-cited additional reasons:

People do really like Google

This assertion may seem incorrect but the incredible success of the Mountain View giant would never be so explosive without that appeal they have (it's like that other one Apple has too).

Google simply works

And, you may throw a wild goat (or whatever you usually throw at blasphem prophets) at me, their algorithm works damn well.

Today Google is perceived as

THE search-engine

And this one doesn't really need further explanations...

Right by now 

Google isn't only search

Just look at their on-line office suite, GMail, YouTube, AdSense, AdWords, Maps, Android and so on.
All the services Google offer contribute to the appeal we told before and increase the number of data they can reach with their search algorithm.


So, why do you insist on promoting your ideas as alternative to Google?!?
Just be smart: promote them as complimentary to it or, best of all, do not even cite Google when describing your "completely-new-and-mighty-algorithm".

I think someday, by doing so, your ideas could become a Mountain.
Or a great river, if you like it better.

Google Apps restyled - Updates

Aggiornamento:
Il restyling è verificato sul word-processor non solo di Google Apps ma anche sulla versione individuale di Google Docs.
Attualmente sono stati aggiunti alcuni nuovi pulsanti integrati nella barra che contiene i comandi di editing.
In particolare il pulsante "Save" (quello con il floppy) viene spostato in questa barra a partire dalla posizione (effettivamente un po scomoda) che occupava precedentemente (in alto a destra sopra le schede "Share" e "Publish").

Per ora nessuna traccia di elefanti in tutù...

Google Apps restyled

Sembrerebbe che Google Apps (la versione integrata dei tools Google per le aziende) e in particolare Google Docs stia subendo (o abbia già subito) un leggero restyling grafico.

Per ora non ho ancora notato nuove o modificate funzionalità, ma data l'ora potrei benissimo non trovare niente di strano in un elefante azzurro col tutù rosa che mi chiede dov'è Via Dante...

The power(s) of Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a wonderful tool that you can't miss if you must manage and monetize one or more web-sites.

It's so full of interesting and useful features that I'm finding new ones every day.
E.g., this way for a awesome result:
1. Login to Google Analytics
2. Select the web-site you want to analyze
3. Select "Content" from the left menu
4. Now select "Site Overlay" from the newly displayed list
5. Check the scores of your links and contents by watching at the little blue-and-white colored bars

YouTube Doubler

YouTube Doubler shows side-by-side two videos you selected among the (zillion-) ones hosted by youtube.
Check this to see it in action.

iGoogle tips'n'tricks

How to make Google suggests recommended content based on your web-searches:
1. Switch your Google web history to "recording mode"
2. Add a new tab to your iGoogle page
3. Choose for the new tab the label "Recommendations"
4. Check the "I'm feeling lucky. Automatically add stuff based on the tab name." radio button
5. The newly created tab will host videos, searches, gadgets, pages and news based on your web-searches

P.S. To delete your web history records go to "https://www.google.com/accounts/EditServices" and select "Delete Web History"
